Kenna Timmerman, an eighth grader at St. Andrew School in Delavan, won the Veterans Day essay contest sponsored by the committee working to restore Delavan's Civil War monument.
The contest was offered to students at Delavan Christian, Our Redeemer and St. Andrew schools.
The only rule was to tell the story of a veteran in five sentences.
Kenna's essay, on her great-grandfather read:
"My great-grandfather, Dean Custer, was in the Navy. He first enlisted when he was eighteen years old and was stationed in many places, but mostly in San Diego, for many years. One of his jobs was to steer the boat, which took soldiers from the big ships to shore. He was actually stationed in Pearl Harbor and left two days before the attack. I’m very proud of my great-grandfather and the things he did for our country."

Congratulations to the winner, but why was this contest offered only to private schools?
