— Alcohol and speed are suspected in a crash that damaged about 30 feet of concrete bridge railing in Janesville early Sunday.

Veronica L. Walker, 25, of 340 S. Academy St., Janesville, was arrested on a charge of operating while intoxicated, causing injury, according to a Janesville Police Department news release.

Walker and one of two passengers in her vehicle were taken to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center for treatment. Walker was treated and released.

A second passenger was jailed on a probation violation. The names of the passengers were not immediately available.

Police believe Walker was speeding across the bridge at about 2:20 a.m. Sunday when the car jumped the curb and hit the bridge railing.

The car then spun around and hit the railing again. The car finally stopped in front of the Riverfront Centre on the west side of the bridge.

The crash pushed some of the vertical concrete pillars into the Rock River, but most of the 1-foot-wide concrete balustrade remained on the bridge.

Most of it was cracked and leaning out over the water.

City workers blocked the bridge's south sidewalk and secured the damaged railing with orange plastic fencing and plastic ties.
