Lake Geneva referendum

LAKE GENEVA Voters decided Tuesday that they want to stop electing the Lake Geneva treasurer and deputy clerk.
Instead, they will get a new, appointed position called deputy clerk-treasurer. The city council will appoint the deputy clerk-treasurer starting in 2014.
The idea of combining the two positions was suggested by an internal controls audit in 2009.
Voters on Tuesday agreed with the idea and approved changing the city's charter ordinance to make it so.
The city council approved the ordinance change in May, but a petition forced a referendum on the measure.
The current treasurer is expected to serve out the term that ends in April 2014.
The deputy clerk-treasurer will become a professional position with annual job evaluations.
City officials have not said what the salary for the new position would be.
The current part-time treasurer is paid $16,000. The deputy clerk's salary is $36,889.
Lake Geneva City Administrator Dennis Jordan has suggested that because the current treasurer position is not a full-time job, the combined position could offer more flexibility. He said the deputy clerk-treasurer could help in areas of need, such as human resources or the city clerk's office.
