August elected to second term in 32nd Assembly District

Republican Rep. Tyler August of Lake Geneva won a second term in the 32nd Assembly District, beating Democrat Kim Peterson and Libertarian David Stolow.

"I want to thank the voters in the 32nd Assembly District for allowing me to represent them for a second term," August said. "It is an honor to have that trust placed in me by them."

August, who had an advantage with districtwide name recognition, captured 15,023 votes in victory, followed by Peterson's 10,410 votes and Stolow's 757.

"Election night is a humbling time, and I'm thankful the voters have recognized what I've done and asked me to represent them for another term," August said.

He said one key to his re-election was following through on the goals of his first campaign.

"I said I would go to Madison to balance the budget without raising taxes, and we did that," August said. "I said I would vote to establish voter ID and concealed carry, and I did that.

"With the budget, we knew tough decisions would have to be made, but we made those decisions to get the state's finances back in order," he said.

August, a former chief of staff for Rep. Thomas Lothian, became the youngest serving member of the Assembly at age 27 when he was elected in 2010. It was his first elected position.

He also worked as chairman of the Republican Party in the 1st Congressional District.

His freshman term was marked by voting for the Act 10 legislation, which eliminated collective bargaining for most unionized public employees and requires them to make larger contributions to their health care and pension plans.

He also voted for a mining bill that failed to pass the Senate. August said he wants to see a mining bill pass in the next legislative session.
