— President Barack Obama has won Wisconsin, capturing the state’s 10 electoral votes for a second time and defeating a Republican ticket that included Wisconsin U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan.

The president defeated Republican Mitt Romney in the state during Tuesday’s election.

Obama won the state in 2008 by 14 points. But since then, Wisconsin has shifted hard to the right. Many Republicans were confident that Romney could win the state, given that Republican Gov. Scott Walker defeated a recall effort in June.

But Obama held a lead in the polls all year. In October, Obama attracted 30,000 people to the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison for his largest campaign event up to that point.

The win continues the string of Democratic presidential victories in Wisconsin dating back to 1984.
