Bond set at $20,000 in domestic case

JANESVILLE — A Whitewater man accused of stabbing people in his home and fleeing to Rock County with injured children in the car could return to Walworth County today where he is expected to be charged with attempted homicide.

Larry M. Shannon, 40, of 310 S. Janesville St., Whitewater, is charged in Rock County Court with three counts of first-degree recklessly endangering safety and one count of fleeing. Court Commissioner Charles Holznecht on Wednesday set a $20,000 cash bond for Shannon.

Police responded to Shannon's home at 3:57 p.m. Monday after a report that a child was cut during a domestic disturbance. Before Whitewater police got to the home, Shannon had fled with two children in a car. Police were able to force the car to stop an hour later in Beloit, according to court documents.

Walworth County authorities could take custody of Shannon as soon as today, Rock County District Attorney David O'Leary said Wednesday. He could appear in Walworth County Court on Friday, O'Leary said.

There, Shannon faces charges of attempted homicide and false imprisonment, according to a Tuesday news release from the Rock County Sheriff's Office and the Whitewater Police Department.

A Rock County deputy spotted Shannon's car at 4:20 p.m. Monday on County S near Creek Road in the town of Turtle northeast of Beloit. Police were told Shannon was a suspect in a multiple stabbing in Whitewater and was thought to be driving to a house in Rock County, according to the criminal complaint.

Police from several departments joined the chase. At one point, Shannon waved to a deputy in the rear-view mirror, according to the criminal complaint.

Shannon swerved across four lanes of traffic to avoid stop sticks at Shopiere and Creek roads. He nearly crashed into a garbage truck at Huebbe Parkway and Prairie Avenue, according to the complaint.

Shannon stopped in the 1200 block of Philhower Road where a 12-year-old child got out of the car. Shannon took off at 80 mph. The child had a deep cut in her neck, according to the complaint.

Shannon swerved toward a parked squad car at Philhower and Creek roads. When town of Beloit Police Sgt. Ronald Northrop jumped out of the way, Shannon appeared to swerve toward him, according to the complaint.

A Wisconsin state trooper rammed Shannon's car and caused it to spin into a tree and come to a stop at 4:55 p.m. at Skyline and Wren drives on Beloit's east side.

The 6-year-old passenger was transported to Beloit Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. The child told police Shannon had attacked the child's mother and siblings.

The 6-year-old told police Shannon ignored the children's pleas to pull over and said something to the effect of, "I'm not going back to jail," according to the complaint.
