— The Walworth County District Attorney's Office issued a complaint Wednesday charging the Pell Lake Sanitary District clerk with theft and misconduct in office.

JoAnn Kanas, 52, W1344 Glenwood Road, Lake Geneva, is accused of stealing more than $20,000 from the district. According to the complaint, Kanas was asked if she "borrowed" the money from the district, and she said she had and began to cry.

Patrick Romenesko, a certified public accountant, discovered the missing money during an audit of the district's books.

Kanas told investigators she had been taking money from the district since 2010 and ultimately paid it all back, according to the complaint.

Kanas faces a maximum sentence of 13 years, six months in prison and a $35,000 fine. Both charges are felonies.
