Woman dies in tree-trimming accident on Lake Shore Path
WILLIAMS BAY A Darien woman walking along the shore path of Geneva Lake Thursday was killed by a falling branch while a tree-trimming crew was working in the area.
Jane L. Westmas, 61, died of massive internal injuries to her chest, according to Walworth County Coroner John Griebel.
On Thursday afternoon, Westmas and her son Jason Westmas, 35, had been walking the path near the Conference Point Center, an interfaith retreat center near the northwestern shore of Geneva Lake in Williams Bay, according to Williams Bay Police Chief Robert Pruessing.
Workmen from Creekside Tree Service of Crystal Lake, Ill., were trimming trees at Conference Point property at the time
Pruessing, who noted his department was awaiting the coroner's report before completing the police report, said Creekside workers told officers they called out a warning to the walkers.
However, a branch fell and struck Jane Westmas. The Williams Bay Rescue Squad responded to the call at 2:01 p.m., and transported the woman to Mercy Walworth Hospital and Medical Center in Lake Geneva, where she was pronounced dead.
