— The Delavan Police Department notes on its Facebook page that a couple of businesses in Delavan have recently been burglarized, and offers tips for what to do if you discover you’re the victim of a burglary:

--Leave your business immediately when you walk in on a burglar or discover you’ve been burglarized. You don’t know if the burglar is still within, and you should let the police deal with clearing the premises.

--Call the police. Wait at a neighbor’s house or someplace other than on your business until they arrive. Do not return to the premises before the police arrive.

--Don’t disturb the crime scene. Resist the temptation to pick anything up from the floor and make an attempt to not touch anything so as not to disturb any potential evidence that may have been left behind.

--Often times burglars will eat, drink and use the bathroom while inside. These may all be valuable sources of information and potential areas of evidence collection.

--Recall everything you saw at the scene so you can give a clear and concise description to the police. Make notes while you wait for them to arrive.

--If you saw the burglar, note his/her physical appearance. Each minute detail will assist the police in locating the suspect before he strikes again. If he had a car, describe it.

These same steps can also be applied to home burglaries. If you have any questions about this or other issues, call the Delavan Police Department at (262) 728-6311.
