Janesville 11s open with shutout victory
ELIZABETHTOWN, KY. The Janesville 11-year-old all-star squad opened the Cal Ripken Ohio Valley Regional with a 7-0 victory over host Elizabethtown (Ky.) on Thursday.
Ben Coulter, Sam Nemetz and J.J. Brennan each had two hits to spark Janesville’s 10-hit attack.
“Our kids did a really good job,” Coach Pat Campbell said. “It probably could have been by more. We let a couple of opportunities slip away early.”
Brennan drove in three runs, while Coulter, Jordan Bailey and Jacob Campbell each drove in one each.
Janesville took command with a six-run second inning, with the help of three Elizabethtown errors and four hits. Brennan hit a two-run single and Bailey and Coulter each drove in a run.
Bailey pitched the first three innings to earn the win. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out five.
“We got great pitching,” Campbell said. “Bailey came out and mowed them down.”
Dan Blomgren pitched two innings and Keaton Arreazola pitched one to finish up.
Rain and lightning forced the postponement of Janesville’s scheduled second game Thursday against Matoon, Ill. The game will be played starting at noon today. Janesville is scheduled to play Irvington, Ind. at 4 p.m. today to complete pool play.
The 12-team tournament will be seeded 1-12 for single-elimination play that starts Saturday. The top four seeds earn a first-round bye.
