McCann leads Janesville to opening win

GENOA CITY — Sam McCann and the Janesville American Legion baseball team got the AAA district tournament off to a good start here Wednesday.

McCann pitched a complete-game shutout to lead Post 205 to a 3-0 win over Kenosha in the first game of the double-elimination tournament. Janesville (26-13) plays Genoa City at 5 p.m. today.

Janesville got the only run it needed in the second on Will Theisen’s RBI single, then rode the right arm of McCann to the win.

“Sam didn’t have his best stuff tonight, but he also knew he had to go nine innings instead of the seven that he is used to,” Janesville coach Bob Schenck said. “He took a little bit off his pitches to make sure he was throwing strikes. He was still overpowering, though, at times.”

Janesville managed only five hits and struck out nine times. McCann had two of Janesville’s hits, including an RBI single in the eighth.

“We’ve got to swing the bats much better than we did today if we’re going to have success in this tournament,” Schenck said. “Five hits and nine strikeouts is not going to cut it because we won’t have the luxury of Sam pitching for us every game. We’ve got some very capable pitchers behind Sam, starting with Andy (Kersten) tomorrow night, but we’ve got to swing the bats better than we have been lately.

“But it’s always good to win the first game of a tournament—especially when it’s double-elimination. If we can get a win tomorrow, we’ll put ourselves in a good position.”
