Board of Regents honors UW-W employee
WHITEWATER Denise Ehlen, the director of research and sponsored programs at UW-Whitewater, is a recipient of the 2012 Staff Award for Excellence.
The UW System Board of Regents announced the award in Milwaukee, citing Ehlen's fundraising efforts.
Under her leadership, extramural funding has grown from $1.5 million annually to more than $6 million.
She led UW-Whitewater's efforts to get a $6 million federal grant to fund an initiative that unites economic development and small business development centers within the university with more than 30 regional organizations.
"Because of her efforts, students have had unique opportunities to become actively involved in research and business," the regents said. "A colleague has called Ehlen's efforts and contributions 'pivotal in transforming the college.'"
Ehlen will receive a $5,000 award for professional development to enhance her program. Academic staff members from each of the UW institutions were nominated for the awards. Ehlen and the director of human resources at UW-Eau Claire received awards.
"By regularly going the extra mile to help students succeed and to make our Wisconsin communities stronger, they are a tribute to the high caliber and commitment of our academic staff system wide," said Regent John Drew, chairman of the award selection committee.
