— McHenry County currently has only one roundabout, located in a Wal-Mart parking lot in Johnsburg, but that soon will change, according to a story in the Daily Herald.

The story noted that the McHenry County Division of Transportation is planning a roundabout in downtown Johnsburg, with construction to start next year. The agency is also considering two other roundabouts near Island Lake and Woodstock.

The Illinois Department of Transportation is planning three more roundabouts near Crystal Lake and Huntley, according to an IDOT spokesman. An informational meeting on the projects is slated for this fall.

An MCDOT design managers said the roundabouts move traffic more efficiently and safely than in traditional intersections, and also are generally less expensive to build.
