— A Racine Horlick High School teacher, being honored for humanitarian work during a Martin Luther King Day ceremony, refused to accept an award from Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Janesville), saying Ryan’s voting record on civil rights issues is dismal.

According to a Jan. 27 story by Today's TMJ4, Al Levie, who works with the NAACP and immigrant group Voces de la Frontera, was being honored at Gateway Technical College earlier this month. Levie accepted the award from the college, but declined Ryan’s certificate, deeming it inappropriate.

The story reported a spokesperson from Ryan’s office defending the congressman and terming the incident unfortunate.

PR, you must be missing the two mentions of "legalization" in VdlF's mission statement. And that's just in the opening paragraph.

Typically, if someone is concerned with "legalizing" someone else, then they are, de facto and de jure, working with someone who is illegal.

Given that, and given that Mr. Levie aided VdlF, then he did indeed aid illegal invaders.

Just think of how your defense would sound in a different context:

"Well, yes, Mr. X did work with the Klan, but only on their roadside clean-up program-he didn't support that part of their platform that called for illegl activities."

But that's different, right?

In one case you have an athlete being honored by our President, along with his teammates, for winning a sports championship. The honor is purely symbolic and is extended to mostly ALL championship winning teams for the purpose giving those teams national recognition. As far as I know the President Obama is all for hockey. He has never expressed any disdain for the sport or voted against any legislation that would prevent individuals from participating in hockey based on age, religion, gender, nationality, etc.
-
In the other case you have an individual being honored for his humanitarian work with the NAACP and helping immigrants learn and understand their civil rights. Yet the Legislator bestowing the award (Ryan) has not supported much of the civil rights legislation that has come up in the House. I don’t understand Ryan’s involvement in presenting a certificate to someone performing work that Ryan himself does not support. Now THAT’S hypocrisy.
-
Obviously, RAF, you’re a little fuzzy on the concept of hypocrisy.
-
There is NOTHING to indicate that Mr. Levie’s work aided illegal immigrants, except for your claims SG. So who is exaggerating?

Ah yes another example of liberal hypocrisy, when an athlete recently refused to attend a meeting with his team and the president he was labeled disrespectful but this teacher is given accolades. I happen to think both have the right to be disrespectful no matter how stupid they both look.

PR, that's a fairly stale leftist tactic. When ion doubt, exaggerate.

I neve said "all" the people helped by the NAACP or VdlF were illegal invaders. Actually, I didn't mention the NAACP at all, but hey, now that you bring it up...

ANY group whose expressed purpose is to assist people from another country, here in violation of our law, is de facto anti-American, and should be shut down.

Now, if VdlF wanted to help, that would be great. They could start by treating the Latinos who are here LEGALLY fairly. They could help in the repatriation of illegal aliens to their homelands, and establish programs there to assist them in legal immigration.

See, that's the way it is supposed to be done-you get your immigration status squared-away BEFORE you go into a country, not after.

Here's a little experiment for you. Sneak across the border into Mexico, and head for a large city in the interior. Once you get there, go into any public office and request assistance-in English, of course-and see how long it takes you to end-up in jail.

So your main point is that those being helped by the NAACP and Voces de la Frontera are all here illegally? Perhaps it's time for you to reassess your adherence to the Constitutional Fascist theories. Not everything with legs, walks.

PR, you miss my main point.

Civil Rights for American Citizens, sure.

Civil Rights for those whose very presence here is a felony?

No, not hardly. I would say they have the right to a nice train ride to the closest border.

But then, viewing the world through left-tinted glasses sometimes blinds one to the fact that their country is being overrun.

"... I would posit that teaching people about "discrimination, OSHA regulations, labor laws, worker's compensation" is not teaching them to, as you say, abide by the regulations, but rather, to take advantage of them for their own gain."
-
Therein lies your problem SG. Were not the laws and regulations pertaining to discrimination, OSHA, labor rights and worker's compensation put in place to stop employers from "gaming" the system and taking advantage of employees? Those laws and regulations exist to prevent oppression. But then the importance of civil rights is more difficult to ascertain when wearing the blinders that come with being a "Constitutional Fascist".

PanamaRed...my my, haven't seen any of THAT in a good bit!

Anyhow. I'm not a conservative, PR, I'm a Constitutional Fascist. There is nothing left to conserve in this country, only socialistic rot and rapacious internationalism.

As for what Voces teaches, I would posit that teaching people about "discrimination, OSHA regulations, labor laws, worker's compensation" is not teaching them to, as you say, abide by the regulations, but rather, to take advantage of them for their own gain.

And if that is "disinformation", then lay it on their doorstep, because the passage in quotes is a cut-n-paste from their website.

Now, having lived in various parts of Mexico and points south, I can understand why Latinos want to come here, and I have no problem with it. As long as they stop at the border and get permission.

As far as being on welfare or unemployment, I have never had the benefit of the former, and haven't collected the latter since 1977. I got smart after that and quit the union job I had and went to work in the real world.

As to your assertion that this individual is doing some positive work, well, if he is, good on him. However, if all he is doing is teaching Illegal Immigrants how to dodge ICE, then he is a traitor and a criminal.

Typical conservative rant SG. Rather than laying blame for a lack of immigration enforcement on past Republican and Democrat administrations, it's much easier to criticize those trying to improve their lives. NONE of the information YOU copied from Voces de la Frontera's website mentions anything about teaching immigrants to "game" the system. In fact the information clearly states they help immigrants to LEARN the laws and regulations which enable them to ABIDE by the laws and regulations. Most of those on unemployment and welfare are people like you. Individuals like Mr. Levie are HELPING immigrants CONTRIBUTE to our society. What are you doing besides spreading misinformation?

Ah, those evil Republicans!

Of course, anyone working for such a pro-American group as Voces de la Frontera SHOULD turn down the proposed award, as they aren't concerned so much with Civil Rights as they are with gaming the American system and helping Invaders, er, I mean, Illegal Aliens, who have broken the immigration laws of our country and remain here in violation of those laws, to stay here.

From the Voces de la Frontera website...

"The agency provides classes to train workers and other immigrants about discrimination, OSHA regulations, labor laws, worker's compensation, legalization and work visas, and more day-to-day topics such as how to obtain a driver's license, how to buy a house, and how to fill out taxes and open bank accounts. Ongoing campaigns include legalization and access to higher education for immigrant students."

Think they could have stressed "legalization" a few more times?!

Forget about teaching them to speak English, or providing any meaningful job-skill training, or assisting in acculturating them to live in OUR Country, let's just teach them how to get unemployment and welfare.

You're right crafty, Ryan is a loser. Mr. Levie's actions were courageous and commendable and provided a valuable lesson to his students. It's good to see an individual willing to take a stand for what is right, even though unwarranted criticism is sure to follow.
