— Third grade students at Fontana Elementary School participated in ‘Opera in the Classroom,’ a music program sponsored by the Lyric Opera of Chicago that teaches young students about opera. The program was taught by Cynthia Fueredi and Laura Shimkus, volunteer docents from the Lake Geneva Chapter of the Lyric Opera of the Chicago. Tracy Mallon, music teacher at Fontana, also was involved with the program.

Through the study of Rossini’s La Cenerentola (also known as Cinderella), students learned basic opera vocabulary, roles, and behind-the-scenes jobs. Students got a glimpse into the multi-faceted world of opera through journal writing, role playing, and singing.

The program concluded on Jan. 10 with a mini performance, in English, of La Cenerentola, which showcased the students’ newly acquired knowledge of opera.

Fontana’s seventh grade students also are studying opera. They will attend a matinee at the Lyric Opera of Chicago on Jan. 26 to see a full-length production of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute.” In preparation, students are taking a deeper look into the plot, and the composer. Mallon hopes that this exposure to opera will lead to a greater understanding and appreciation of opera. The trip was made possible by donations from the Lake Geneva Chapter of the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
