— For the first time, the entire Symphonic Winds will join the Delavan-Darien High School Orchestra to perform as the Delavan-Darien High School Symphony. The group will present a free concert at 7 p.m., Jan. 23 in the High School Auditorium, 150 Cummings St., Delavan. Non-perishable food items brought to the concert will be donated to the Delavan Food Pantry.

Selections will be performed by the Concert Band, Symphonic Winds, String Orchestra and the all new DDHS Symphony Orchestra.

The String Orchestra will perform two familiar selections — Jenkin’s “Palladio,” first movement and DDHS graduate Chris Render’s arrangement of Metallica’s “Unforgiven,” which is inspired by the cello quartet Apocalyptica.

The Concert Band will perform “Surprises” by Dave Parish and “Flight of the Thunderbird,” by Illinois composer and high school band director Richard Saucedo.

The Symphonic Winds will tackle two staples of wind band literature with their performance of Gustav Holst’s “Second Suite in F For Military Band,” and the haunting ballad “October,” by Eric Whitacre.

The wind ensembles are directed by Jim Gornick.

The DDHS Symphony Orchestra, directed by Jennifer Bayerl, will perform two evocative works: Ippolitov-Ivanov’s “Procession of the Sardar,” and Lopez’s “Bounty Hunter’s Theme.”

According to the DDHS music directors, many composers, musicians and listeners believe a symphony orchestra is the ultimate ensemble. The symphony orchestra combines all four families of instruments — string, woodwind, brass and percussion — on a grand scale.
