A sluggish third period doomed the Janesville Bluebirds on Tuesday night.

Despite leading 2-1 after two periods, Janesville's high school boys hockey team surrendered three goals in the third in a 4-2 Big Eight Conference loss to Middleton.

Janesville (1-5, 1-2) took a one-goal lead in the second on Mike Money's goal off a deflection. Middleton, however, responded to tie the game just 38 seconds into the third period on a shorthanded goal and took the lead for good at 5:40 of the third on Jack Kvistad's goal.

"We competed well and were right there, but we came up short," Janesville coach John Mauermann said. "I can't fault our effort, but we gave up a couple of soft goals in the third and couldn't catch up.

"With three games this week, it's important that we bounce back and try to get a win Thursday night. We're getting better but it's not showing up in the win column."

Janesville plays at Madison West on Thursday night.
