School district's Bags of Hope effort raises more than $43,000

JANESVILLE — The Janesville School District reports it raised $43,800 for its annual Bags of Hope food distribution to the needy.

The amount exceeds the district's $40,000 goal.

School district employees, students and others held a number of fundraisers to raise the money, which will buy food for Saturday, Dec. 15 distribution event.

The district's administration and employee unions took over the long-running event from the United Auto Workers and General Motors four years ago.

The goal in recent years has been to provide two weeks worth of groceries for 300 needy families.

In-kind donations of food and discounts from local businesses have added to the amounts of food distributed.

More than 300 families and 75 senior citizens benefited from last year's event, according to the district.

The goal is to help a similar number this year.
