O'Leary scores 18, but Bradley falls in shootout
MILWAUKEE Catie O'Leary couldn't get anything going from the field at the Klotsche Center on Tuesday night.
But that didn't stop her from breaking records in a homecoming game that contained everything for O'Leary and her teammates but a victory.
In a nonconference thriller featuring the sheer twists and turns befitting a March Madness classic, the UW-Milwaukee women's basketball team edged Bradley University, 116-112, in double overtime.
O'Leary, a former Janesville Parker standout and current redshirt junior guard for Bradley, went 16-of-16 from the free-throw line. That tied a school record for most free throws made in a game and set a record for most makes without a miss.
"You just have to change your mind-set, get to the line," said O'Leary, who was limited to 1-of-10 from the field by the Panthers' attentive defense.
It was O'Leary's first game in her home state since transferring from the University of Wisconsin, and she had a large contingent of family and friends in the house.
"It's fun to be in games like that," said O'Leary, who finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists in a team-high 43 minutes. "Close games, they're tough, but they're intense. It's fun, because you have to crack down and work as a team. Obviously, this one didn't go the way we wanted it to."
O'Leary swished two free throws to give the Braves (5-4) an 87-84 lead with 3.7 seconds left, but Milwaukee's Ashley Green banked in a running three-pointer from the right wing at the buzzer to send it to overtime.
The game remained tied at 101-101 after one extra period, but the Panthers (4-4) drained three triples in the second overtime to take command. Green led the Panthers with 33 points, while Shronda Butts scored 34 for Bradley to pace all scorers.
