DNR warns against spreading plant that threatens bats
MADISON — Wisconsin wildlife officials are warning people not to spread a plant that threatens bats.
Invasive plant specialists at the Department of Natural Resources say seed heads from common burdock can stick to almost anything. They say passing bats can snag their wings on the seed heads, get tangled up and die of starvation.
The DNR says anyone who works, hikes, bikes or spends time outdoors to clean mud, seeds and other plant parts from their clothes, equipment and pets to avoid spreading the plant to new areas. The agency also is asking property owners to cut out any burdock they find.
Wisconsin is home to seven bat species. Four of them are listed as threatened because they're at risk of contracting the deadly bat disease white-nose syndrome.
