Crash victim had taken friend's van
BELOIT The Janesville woman who died Saturday after fleeing a traffic stop was driving her friend's van without the friend's permission, according to police reports.
Heather L. Pfeiffer, 27, died after losing control of the van and striking a tree at Prairie and Carlyle avenues in Beloit at 3:30 a.m. Saturday. Police estimate she was traveling more than 70 mph after she left the scene of a traffic stop about 1.4 miles north of the crash on Prairie.
According to a Beloit police report:
The friend gave Pfeiffer a ride in the 2003 Dodge Caravan earlier night of July 27 to run errands. The two drank some beers and Pfeiffer left, the friend told police. Pfeiffer returned to the friend's Janesville home three hours later and asked to borrow the van.
The friend said she would not loan the van because she knew Pfeiffer had been drinking and that Pfeiffer "seemed to be more intoxicated at this time." Pfeiffer left, and when Janesville police contacted the friend later, she noticed her keys were not where she had left them, and the van was gone.
