— Janesville Craig’s baseball team rode the right arm of Colin Frey and the bat of Nick Blomgren to victory Thursday night.

Blomgren drove in four runs, while Frey allowed no runs in five innings in his first varsity start to lead Craig to an 8-1 Big Eight Conference win over Beloit Memorial at Riverside Park.

Craig (4-2, 3-1) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and never looked back.

“It was a nice effort by the whole team,” Craig coach Vic Herbst said. “Colin gave a great effort his first start, and offensively, we ran the bases well and got some timely hits.

“Tuesday was a tough loss against Sun Prairie, so it was nice to see us bounce back with a win.”

Blomgren, a freshman, had a hand in all three innings that the Cougars scored. He singled in Riley Quinn in the first to make it 2-0 and added an RBI triple in the third. Blomgren’s two-run single in the fourth highlighted a four-run inning.

“I moved Nick down in the order from second to fifth and he really responded with a big game,” Herbst said.

Frey allowed three hits in five innings of work and struck out four. Craig used three pitchers in the game, with Beloit’s only run unearned in the sixth.

Craig plays at Madison La Follette on Saturday to conclude a three-game week.

-- East 6, Parker 3—Walks continue to plague Parker pitchers.

The Purgolders took advantage of seven walks in pulling away for the Big Eight win.

Parker (1-3, 1-3) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, but East tied the game in the bottom of the inning. The Purgolders took control with a five-run fourth.

“Walks were the story of the game,” Parker coach Brian Martin said. “And that has hurt us all season long. You can’t give good team free passes and expect to have success.

“East isn’t a bad team, but if we throw strikes, it’s a different game.”

Parker catcher Jake Welch hit a two-run homer in the seventh to cut the lead to 6-3, but the Vikings did not threaten after that.

Parker hosts Madison West at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Riverside Park.
