— A newly elected trustee in the village of Fontana already is stepping down, leaving an opening that will be filled with an appointment by the village board.

Derek D'Auria, who finished third in the April 3 election for village trustee with 208 votes was one of three candidates to win a two-year seat on the board. In an April 9 letter to Dennis Martin, Fontana village clerk, D'Auria said he is declining the position, citing personal and professional reasons.

D'Auria is the director of development for George Williams College of Aurora University. The campus is located in Williams Bay.

Martin said the village board would appoint someone to fill the position. An organizational board meeting is scheduled for April 17.

Martin was awaiting word from the village attorney on whether the appointed position would be for one year, until the next local election--or the entire two-year term.

Martin said a similar situation came up for the village in April of 2007, when village trustee Ron Pollitt stepped down to become village president. Pollitt, however, had only one year remaining on his term when he resigned.

The other two village trustees elected on April 3 are Patrick Kenny, an incumbent, and Rick Pappas. Incumbent Cindy Wilson finished fourth.

Why run for office only to resign a week after the election? Was he even sworn in? Is this just ego-driven to see if he can win an election?
