No concealed carry on the Walworth County Fairgrounds

— Although Wisconsin is poised to become the 49th state to allow concealed carry of a firearm, residents still won't be allowed to bring weapons to the Walworth County Fair, Walworth County Fair Board President Ed Sokolowski says.

Sokolowski said concealed weapons would not be allowed at any time on the fairgrounds in Elkhorn.

“We are going to post signs at all of the entrances that concealed weapons are not allowed on our property,” as the new law allows, he said. “We as property owners have the discretion of allowing or not allowing weapons on the property.”

The 100-acre fairgrounds, its buildings and infrastructure are owned by the Walworth County Agricultural Society, a non-profit group. The fair board runs the society, Sokolowski said.

The fair previously has not allowed open carry on the grounds.

Others in Walworth County are not as sure as Sokolowski, at least not yet. Read the full story in the Walworth County Gazette, online in the Gazette e-edition HERE, or check WalworthCountyToday.com after 4 p.m. for the latest details.

What some are failing to realize is that large events like the fair are prime targets for those who would want to cause harm to others . And , those wishing to cause harm to others at this point can walk into the fair with a fire arm with none of us being any the wiser. Sure you have police at the fair but are they in line of sight of everyone at all times ? No. Concealed carry is more of a deterrent than anything. Just ask those at Virginia tech and Fort Hood how well signs really work.

Great advice JCK and if those who carry concealed guns are as sensible as Mr. Fisher claims, they will heed that advice.

If you don't feel safe at the fair without a concealed weapon don't go to the fair.

I don't understand why anyone would find it necessary to bring a weapon to the county fair! Give me a break people! It's a fair!

If they have entrances they can secure when the fair is closed, they can just post the entrances. : (

But unless they have metal detectors (which they should already, since they're concerned about stopping criminals who want to harm people) they can't stop people from carrying concealed.

Signs don't stop criminals, they invite crime.

My reading of the new bill is that they cannot preclude me from having a firearm in my vehicle. In addition, I believe individual buildings would have to be posted, not the grounds themselves.
