Two Mukwonago residents were killed earlier this week in a three-car crash at Highways 20 and ES, according to a police department news release.

The deceased are Irene K. Lehnen and Robert J. Chapman, 86, Walworth County Coroner John Griebel said. Both were passengers in the same car. Chapman was in the front seat. She was in the back seat. Lehnen’s age was not immediately available.

Police say the accident likely was caused when the car in which Lehnen and Chapman were passengers made an illegal turn and an on-coming car smashed into it. A pickup truck that was stopped at the intersection was damaged when one of the crash vehicles veered into it, police say.

Lehnen died at the accident scene. Chapman died later at Waukesha Memorial Hospital, Griebel said.

The wreck happened at 3:23 p.m. Monday.
