For the first time since the 2001-02 season, the University of Wisconsin women’s basketball team is 2-0 in the Big Ten Conference.

The Badgers, thanks to four players in double figures, pulled away from Penn State on Sunday for a 77-62 victory at the Kohl Center.

The win was the fifth straight for Wisconsin (7-7,

2-0), and coupled with a victory at Northwestern in the conference opener, gives the Badgers a 2-0 Big Ten start. The last time Wisconsin started the Big Ten season 2-0 was in 2001-02 when the Badgers defeated seventh-ranked Purdue and Iowa.

Wisconsin senior Alyssa Karel led all scorers with 23 points, senior Tara Steinbauer added 18 points, and sophomore Taylor Wurtz and junior Jade Davis chipped in 14 and 10 points, respectively. Wurtz pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, just missing her third career double-double.

Jefferson High graduate Lin Zastrow had a career-high six assists for UW to lead the team to a season-high 17 assists.

Wisconsin’s five-game winning streak is its longest since the 2008-09 team rattled off 10 straight wins. However, all 10 games were non-conference victories.

The Badgers return to Big Ten play Thursday night at Michigan State.
