WCLO's Steve Benton reports on a new statewide coalition that wants to stop young adults and teens who abuse prescription drugs

RSS

— A new statewide effort to prevent prescription drug abuse by children picks up support in Janesville.

The "Safer Use Prevents Abuse" coalition held a news conference Monday at the Janesville Police Department. Spokesman, Mark Moody, says "one in five Wisconsin teenagers is abusing prescription drugs. In many cases these drugs are taken from adults with prescriptions who don't store them safely."

Rock County District Attorney, David O'Leary, spoke about a Milton case in which a female teen acquired prescription drugs and gave them to a male friend. The 13 year old boy died in February and O'Leary had to prosecute the girl in court.

The Janesville School District, along with law enforcement, health care, and child advocacy groups pledged support for to the coalition and promised to spread the word about the effort.
