EAST TROY East Troy's John Porter led his crew to a win in the Sonar class at eighth annual C. Thomas Clagett Jr. Memorial Regatta for sailors with disabilities, held off Newport, R.I.
Porter was joined by Paralympic gold medalist Maureen McKinnon-Tucker of Marblehead, Mass. and Gerry Tiernan of Falmouth, Mass.
The team scored 10 bullets for the class win. Tiernan is the coach for the Portland High School sailing team.
The regatta was established in 2003 to help sailors with disabilities who hope to represent the U.S.A. at the Paralympic Regatta improve their odds of doing so.
Sailors with vision impairments were welcomed to “The Clagett” in 2008 and compete for the Blind National Sailing Championship.
Any interested sailor with disabilities, including foreign sailors, are welcome to participate in this four-day training and racing program led by sailing coaches internationally recognized for their expertise.
