— A handful of old photographs prompted Izaak Walton League members in Beloit to revive a tradition that dates to the 1950s.

While recently looking at photos donated by former chapter president Myron Clark, members came across some taken during the league’s annual Youth Fishing Derby at the Riverside Park lagoon in Beloit.

A short time later, they decided to revive the popular derby.

“We want to get the youth outdoors, enjoying nature, instead of spending time watching cartoons and playing video games,” said Shannon Ladwig, the chapter treasurer.

The derby — for kids under the age of 16 — will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 5 at the lagoon. A fishing license is not required for children in that age group, although they should be old enough to handle their own fishing pole.

“We want it to be the youth fishing, not the parents fishing,” Ladwig said.

Participation is free. The league will provide hooks and bait. The only thing kids have to bring is their own fishing pole and a desire to have some outdoor fun.
