— A Lake Mills city councilman faces a hearing on his removal from office following allegations of improper influence over a road contract with a subsidiary of B.R. Amon and Son.

The hearing for Councilman Pat Kordus is scheduled for April 7 to consider a four-page compliant filed by City Manager Steve Wilke, according to the Lake Mills Leader.

The complaint alleges that Kordus used his influence to stear the city to a contract that city officials thought was the lowest of three bids ranging from $32,000 to $77,000 for a street repair project.

The city, however, ended up with a bill for $51,000, which was eventually lowered to $49,900, according to the Jefferson Daily Union.

Kordus is employed as the manager of Lake Mills Black Top Inc. (LMBTI), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Elkhorn-based B.R. Amon and Sons, according to the newspaper.

Under state law, elected officials are prohibited from using their public position or office to obtain financial gain or anything of substantial value and from taking any official action substantially affecting a matter in which they have a substantial financial interest.

Have I heard this contractor's name before in politically "connected" contracting stories? So what's new? Maybe further investigation is needed and past history needs to be examined. This might be SOP in Walworth County.

Pretty incredible that it even got this far without intervention by the city attorney. It should have been an obvious recusal from the beginning.
