BMX enthusiasts practice recently at the Walworth County BMX track located in the arena at the Walworth County Fairgrounds.

ELKHORN — Even though there's still snow on the ground outside, it’s bike-racing season inside at Walworth County BMX, located in the arena at the Walworth County Fairgrounds.

Practice begins Wednesday (March 10, 2010) at 6:30 and racing begins Sunday at noon.

BMX practice and racing runs from late October through March, and draws about 200 participants for races and 55 people for weekly practice, said Jake Karau, track operator.

“It’s a great family sport,” Karau said.

The youngest racers are about 3, and the oldest racer is 66, he said. The most popular age group is 9- to 10-year-olds.

On race day, each age group offers races in three divisions — novice, intermediate and expert.

“That’s how a beginner can race without being overwhelmed by the expert,” Karau said.

Racers are placed in divisions based on the number of first-place finishes.

When the indoor BMX season ends later this month, racing action shifts to an outdoor track in Rockford, Karau said.
