Delavan-Darien soars into sectional
No three-time jinx was going to keep Delavan-Darien High’s boys basketball team from its first sectional appearance since 2001.
The Comets earned that berth Saturday night by taking down Union Grove for the third time this season, 54-49, in a WIAA Division 2 regional championship game at Wilmot.
That sends Delavan-Darien (15-9) to Sun Prairie for a Friday night game against Madison Edgewood (16-9) in the semifinals of the Waunakee Sectional.
Delavan-Darien got a 17-13 jump on Union Grove in the first quarter and maintained that edge the rest of the way. The Broncos got within 48-47 in the final period, but 6-5 senior Tyler Butke answered with a three-point play to put the Comets back up by four.
Butke scored Delavan-Darien’s final 14 points after the Comets took a 40-34 lead into the fourth quarter. He finished with 24 points, including a 10-for-13 night on free throws.
Justin Fowkles added 13 points for the Comets. Caleb Beachem and Nathan Radke led Union Grove (12-13) with 17 and 14, respectively.
