FORT ATKINSON -- The body of Lance Cpl. Jacob A. Meinert , the 20-year-old Marine from Fort Atkinson killed in Afghanistan, returned home to the United States Tuesday evening.
Lance Cpl. Jacob A. Meinert, the son of Krista (Mike) Edquist of Fort Atkinson and Brian Warzala of Racine, died Sunday from injuries sustained when he stepped on a landmine in Bastion, Afghanistan.
His mother, Krista Edquist; sister, Randi Meinert; and maternal grandparents, Richard and Donna Meinert, met the airplane carrying Jake Meinert's casket when it arrived at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware.
The casket carrying the body of the Racine native is expected to return to Fort Atkinson later this week.
Details of a memorial service expected to take place in Fort Atkinson have not been set yet, according to the Jefferson Daily Union. It has not been determined when or where the service will be held at this time.
