Fire ripped through the upstairs of a home at 1109 N. Pheasant Court in Elkhorn Thursday morning, Feb. 19, 2010. Terry Mayer/staff.
ELKHORN -- Investigators say a child playing with candle in an upstairs closet led to a fire that damaged an Elkhorn home Friday morning.
Firefighters were called to 1109 N. Pheasant Court at 8:10 a.m. and found smoke pouring from the upstairs windows.
The blaze was contained to the second floor and attic, Elkhorn Fire Chief Rod Smith said.
Smith said the homeowner, Robert Stott, was getting his two children ready for school when he heard the smoke alarm go off.
Stott went upstairs, and after seeing smoke and flames, got out of the house and called 911, Smith said.
After interviewing the father and child, Smith said, officials determined the child playing with the candle in the upstairs bedroom was the probable cause of the fire.
The two-story home is located on a cul-de-sac in a residential neighborhood west of Wisconsin Highway 67 on the north side of Elkhorn.
Thick black smoke drifted over the neighborhood as firefighters broke through the upstairs windows to begin extinguishing the fire.
An aerial-ladder truck lifted another group of firefighters to the roof where they cut a hole to vent the flames.
The fire was under control in about 20 minutes, Smith said.
There were no injures, and no estimate of damage was available Friday afternoon.
About 15 firefighters from Elkhorn were assisted by the Lake Geneva Fire Department as well as firefighters from the city and town of Delavan.
Firefighters cleared the scene by 11:30 a.m. and members of the Walworth County Sheriff's Office Fire Investigation Task Force were continuing their investigation.
