— All-you-can drink alcohol specials at local bars might be a thing of the past under an ordinance being discussed by the Whitewater City Council.

The Jefferson Daily Union reported that council took no action Tuesday, but directed the Alcohol Licensing Committee to gather more information, hold public hearings and return with a recommendation that would be more comprehensive.

Councilman Jim Olsen first proposed the ordinance on behalf of a group of local tavern owners after discussing the issue with them.

In August, Olsen, along with Police Chief James Coan and City Attorney Wally McDonnell, met with five tavern owners to discuss ways to curb binge drinking.

There was general support among bar owners for an ordinance, however, there were concerns that the language of the proposed ordinance wasn't specific enough to address the problem.

The council also decided to seek more input from bar owners as well as the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Committee.
