DEKALB, ILL. -- A rare earthquake early Tuesday morning near DeKalb, Ill., was felt in seven states, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake, which the USGS initially reported as a magnitude 4.3 but later downgraded to 3.8, rattled homes about 3:59 a.m.
The USGS received reports of the earthquake from residents in Lake Geneva, Genoa City, Whitewater, Janesville and other communities throughout southern Wisconsin.

The epicenter was situated 48 miles west of Chicago, between Sycamore and Virgil, Ill.
Kane County sheriff’s spokesman Lt. Pat Gengler saidy dispatchers have been flooded with calls from startled residents, though no injuries or damage have been reported.
