— There's nothing like firing up a friendly crowd to keep a campaign energized.

About 275 voters, candidates and the curious gathered in Beloit Sunday for a joint Walworth and Rock county Lincoln Day Dinner.

Lonna Marouney, media coordinator of the Republican Party of Rock County, told the Beloit Daily News that she was not expecting a large turnout for the annual party event. Normally the night averages somewhere around 120 people, she said.

“We have gotten so much interest,” Marouney said. “We have pulled in a lot of new people.”

Marouney said the event helps all candidates and voters discuss and explore their options. It also gives Rock and Walworth county residents the chance to meet the candidates. Marouney said she hopes those who attended leave with a sense of how far the party has come.

Republican candidate for governor Scott Walker, who grew up in Delavan, pitched the message he's been honing on the campaign trail.

“I am trying to get government back on the side of the people,” Walker said. “I put my faith behind the people.”

He'll face former First District congressman Mark Neumann in the Republican primary. Tom Barrett, Milwaukee's mayor is running on the Democratic ticket.

Scott Walker is a fine young man and I hope he becomes governor and has the courage to get our state back on track. But he better not disappoint me and become like the other politicians.
