— Whitewater police are looking for a suspect in a hit-and-run Tuesday that injured a University of Wisconsin-Whitewater student.

The victim, a 20-year-old male, was transported to Fort Memorial Hospital in Fort Atkinson, where he was treated and released.

According to a Whitewater Police Department news release, the victim was walking southbound on Main Street within the east crosswalk when he was hit by a car turning onto Main Street from Prince Street.

The victim was spun into the air and landed in the left lane of westbound traffic on Main Street.

The driver of the vehicle stopped, got out of his car and looked at the victim lying on the street, and said “I forgot something -- I’ll be right back,” according to police.

But the driver left the scene, traveling eastbound on Main Street.

The driver was described as a college age white male, with short brown hair, approximately 6 ft. to 6 ft 3 in. tall, and approximately 150-175 lbs.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the Whitewater Police Department at 473-0555 or the Walworth County Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (262) 723-2677.

There are certain times of the day that you really have to slow down and watch. There are lighted and blinking crosswalk signs, can't miss them. Thankfully it wasn't a serious injury like the last time.

More from the Whitewater PD News release:

Witnesses at the scene described the striking vehicle as a newer model, silver in color, four-door sedan. One witness described the car as having a “smaller, sporty look, possibly a Mazda”. Another witness said that the first digit of the license plate was the number “1”, but wasn’t certain of the rest of the digits. It is also possible that it was an Illinois license plate.

It doesn't state what the vehicle looked like or if there were any witnesses. That area usually is pretty busy.
