— Parking meter rates in the city of Chicago are expected to jump up to 25 percent Jan. 1.

Nearly a year ago, the Chicago City Council approved a parking meter lease deal with a company now called Chicago Parking Meters, LLC.

The $1.16 billion, 75-year lease allowed for rate increases through 2013.

In 2009, meters that were 25 cents an hour went up to $1 per hour, meters that were 50 cents an hour rose to $2 per hour and downtown meters went up 50 cents from $3 per hour to $3.50 per hour.

Planned 2010 rate increases

$1.00/hour to $1.25/hour

$2.00/hour to $2.50/hour

$3.50/hour to $4.25/hour
