— Lakeshore property owners with structures grandfathered in before current setback rules were adopted will have less red tape to deal with under a proposal from the DNR.

A news conference was scheduled for Wednesday morning at Governor Nelson State Park in Waunakee where representatives from the DNR and business and environmental groups were to detail the proposed changes.

Proposed regulations are HERE.

The regulations will not change the current 75-foot setback requirement, however, one measure involves non-conforming structures located 35 feet to 75 feet from the shoreline.

These structures, mostly cabins and cottages, were built before the 75-foot setback was required.

Owners of these buildings are required to get variances from local zoning officials before they make improvements.

Under the change, spending limits for repairs on these homes would be removed - property owners would no longer need to ask local authorities for a variance if spending on these near-shore structures exceeds 50% of the value of the property.
