Warhawks football enjoy day at zoo
They weren’t there to look at the giraffes, monkeys and other animal attractions.
The Warhawks helped grill food for war veterans.
Those who volunteered included current players Logan Allemand, Tim Depies, Mark Gawronski, Grant Murray, Sam Overton, Aaron Rusch, Troney Shumpert, Jake Taylor, Paul Wick and former Warhawk Pete Kishline.
Milwaukee County executive Scott Walker set up Milwaukee County Operation Freedom, which honors veterans and their families with free admission to the zoo.
UW-Whitewater alumnus and former Warhawk football player Tom Karthausser notified the Warhawks of the volunteer opportunity at the zoo.
“They (the football players) did an outstanding job,” Karthausser said. “Collectively, we grilled 24,000 pieces of meat and all was served to veterans and their families.”
Shumpert, who graduated from Milwaukee Bay View High, and Wick, a Franklin High graduate, said the event gave the Warhawk players who live in the Milwaukee area an opportunity to get together in the summer, and a chance to give back to the community.
