Troopers tougher on Illinois drivers

— Not that Illinois drivers didn't already suspect it, but a recent report suggests Wisconsin state troopers are more likely to be tougher on speeders from Illinois than those from Wisconsin.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel compared the number of warnings and tickets given to Illinois and Wisconsin drivers by the Wisconsin State Patrol.

The paper found 60 percent of Illinois drivers received tickets over warnings compared to Wisconsin drivers getting tickets 40 percent of the time.

"Selective enforcement. And that's what I figure because if they hit somebody from Illinois they know that person's not going to come to court and challenge it," Rep. Jack Franks, a Woodstock, Illinois, Democrat, said.

"Our main charge is safety, and that's what we're out here to do. We're going to do that day in and day out, whether they're from Illinois or they're from Wisconsin," State Patrol Sergeant Anthony Burrell said.

As far as Il. drivers causing "backups"....I don't really notice that , they're usually the ones wanting to go 15- 20 over.

Not that it doesn't happen, but I'VE never been passed by a Wi. driver crossing the double yellow..This has happened to me TWICE this MONTH by IL. plated cars going at least 10 over the limit.

I have noticed more Ill drivers sitting in the PASSING lane and causing back ups.....not so much the speeding. What do people not understand about staying in the right lane when your going SLOWER than the other moving traffic??

I am an IL driver. Seems to me that I only need to pass WI drivers because they are swerving (Drunk) or too slow (20+mph under because they are drunk). Maybe IL residents should stop going to WI for the weekend trips because of this. Watch your economy crumble. Everyone know that WI people don't contribute to their own local economy. Think before you comment on this. Oh, never mind you may not be able to.

Speaking for myself, and only myself I am sure. I think the Wisconsin State Troupers are NOT doing a good enough job. Only 60% getting tickets...thats way to low.

Or it could be that a vast majority of people from the Chicago area who make the weekly pilgrimage to Wisconsin drive like their still on Illinois freeways, which means about 20+ MPH over the speed limit. But what the hell, you're a democrat, put the blame everywhere but where it should go, that's your party line.

Maybe the IL State Police are not as picky about speeders as WI, or maybe that untold GOLDEN RULE of less than 10 over is actually 20 over for IL. Here is a helpful hint if the IL drivers (or any other for that matter) don't want to get pulled over: DON'T SPEED. Why you ask since you are a great driver? Here are a few reasons: you have not had training to operate a vehicle at a high rate of speed, it takes a lot longer to stop, handling is different at high speeds and most drivers over react and cause an accident (maybe involving other vehicles) and so on. SLOW DOWN AND SAVE A LIFE....IT MIGHT BE YOURS THAT YOU SAVE

I've driven the interstate on several occasions in the last couple weekends, and I can not tell you how many unsafe IL drivers I have seen. They are speeding and swerving in and out of the lanes trying to get ahead. They are going to kill someone! I realize not all IL drivers are this way, but it never fails when you see that going on ahead of you or someone flys by, it's IL plates.

I tend to speed on the interstate. However, my experience has shown that if I am getting passed it is more likely to be by somebody from Illinois. Wouldn't it naturally follow that I would be more likely to just get a warning and the faster Illinois driver would get ticketed? Perhaps if people from Illinois slowed down there would not be a disparity between IL and WI drivers.
