Anglers will be heading back to the lakes Saturday for opening day of the inland fishing season.

Both Delavan and Geneva lakes are expected to see heavy traffic.

The DNR’s Randy Schumacher says the long winter and cool water will make largemouth bass sluggish until midday.

He recommends working the north sides of the lakes, fishing shallow bays with dark sediment bottoms.

Artificial bait, like natural-colored plastic worms, are your best bet, he says.

If you’re out early, fish for smallmouth, walleye and northern, working the shallows.

Try jig-and-minnow combinations.

Walleye on Delavan and Geneva lakes will probably still be spawning, so the chances of catching a huge, prespawn female are good, Schumacher says.
